No person has ever been honored for what he received. Honor is our reward when we give.
-Calvin Coolidge, 1872-1973, 30th US President.
My take: this is all fine and good for those who have attained fame or fortune and are thinking about leaving a legacy. Most of mankind is more concerned about survival or just obtaining a modicum of comfort. “Show me the money” is more what they have in mind. Honor is one of those lofty goals that you don’t really focus on until you already have achieved the material things. That’s why your Mother Theresa types are not found on every street corner. Bill Gates can’t give his money away fast enough for honorable causes now that he is one of the two or three richest men on earth. But back when he was building Microsoft into the powerhouse that it became, honor wasn’t on his mind. Microsoft is still one of the most reviled and oft sued companies in the world.
